Good old Pickle Rick
This is a story about the MarbleCards origin card, Pickle Rick. A story about a simple act of kindness and how it significantly impacted my life.
Before we get to it, a little background on me.
The year is 2018. The month is June and I just acquired some shit ass 6 month course diploma for audio engineering. Obviously, I didn’t learn a lot in such a short period of time, but it did help a lot.
I lived those 6 months alone. A new city, new people and most importantly I met a lot of likeminded people in school where it’s generally been good times.
Fast forward the whole summer of messing around, drinking, smoking joints and all that good shit. It was time to actually find a fucking job!
I’m not a teenager anymore eh?
Anyway, it didn’t take long for me to realize how hard was it actually to find a decent job. Especially being audio technician, without any proper experience, in a small Eastern Europe country. What other opportunities do I even have?
Well I turn to good ole online scams and ponzi scheme wageslaving methods.
I’ve tried it all. Clickworker, Mechanical Turk, bunch of dumb ass surveys sites that never actually had any surveys for me because no one really cares about this bitch ass not too long ago war torn country and all other kinds of referral wastes of time.
Anyway, after about 26 zillion clicks I’ve earned about $0.03.
Absolute massive gainz.
Somehow, somewhere I find out about cent.co. Some new writing platform with just a couple thousand users.
To put it simply, users would reward good posts with Ether.
Okay, Ether. I’ve always been a bit intrigued by cryptocurrencies but I’ve never really dug deeper into it nor I had funds to buy any. That was kind of my only knowledge of crypto.
Bitcoin.Buy.Go.Big.Gainz.Lambo.
Reading through the Cent site and seeing tons of various subjects, I realized there really wasn’t any content about music production, audio mixing and such. Naturally, I saw an opportunity there and thought “why not try it?”.
I jump in and write few articles and guides. How to make fat ass techno rave baby killer kicks and such.
After about few weeks,3–4 guides and learning about Ethereum in the mean time I’ve earned about 5 dollars. I was absolutely fucking ecstatic. It felt like I had 7 million dollars in my wallet.
So, how does MarbleCards fits in here?
One of them days lurking through Cent, i bump onto this post.
Wait, hol’ up. What the fuck are NFTs and what do you mean you can turn links into collectible cards?
I was instantly intrigued by it. I just had to know more for some reason.
I enter MarbleCards site, and there’s a timer… I remember this vividly.
23 minutes and 10 seconds until the launch.
I find and join their discord very quickly, and there i see bunch of people posting cards. I later learned these were test cards before the Mainnet launch.
At the time, I really wasn’t sure what is going on exactly but I was in love with the cards.
Reading through platform it didn’t take long to learn how it worked. I wasn’t sure why, but I knew how. I’ve quickly went over a few articles explaining what NFTs were. I mean, I didn’t really know what I was reading… but I wanted to know more.
Anyway, it was then about 5 minutes until launch.
I learn on discord chat that after launch we can mint cards from a site called Know Your Meme.
Know Your Meme is a website dedicated to documenting Internet phenomena: viral videos, image macros, catchphrases, web celebs and more.
So here I am, with my hard earned $5. I calculate that i can make 2 cards.
Do I want 2 cards or $5. VERY HARD DECISION.
Well, fuck it. Lesgo baby.
At the time I was watching Rick and Morty.
So naturally, I type Pickle Rick into KYM search bar. And there it is.
I copy link and now we wait. (I found another link and minted it, but that’s story for another time :D)
Just in time before launch.
Site launches, I paste link. Create URL. LESGOOOOOOOOO
And this bad boy comes out.
I was instantly in love with it.
B..b.. but I wanted more.
I was hoooked.
I NEED MOAR!!!
A few days into platform launch, people keep minting and posting their new cards in discord chat.
Oh boy, am I jelly.
Well, as we run out of Origin Cards IDs, and “common” cards are starting to mint I notice Marketplace is becoming more and more active. People want them Origins.
I haven’t yet thought about selling at all but as I post my card to brag about it in general chat I notice the lust.
Hmm, other people seem to like this bad boy as well.
And the idea poisons my mind. Should i sell it?
If I do, I will be able to mint a lot more cards. And that’s all that was on my mind, I want more of this. So, i made the decision. I don’t want to part with my beloved Pickle Rick, but it will enable me to mint more cards so it’s a win-win for both parties.
Anyway, I go on and post it in Marketplace.
I wasn’t surprised at who wanted it first… Johan of course.
The offer is a robust 0.2 ETH. But, I’m suddenly a greedy little piece of shit and I want more. So I say something about lines, I will try to see if someone offers more.
It doesn’t happen.
Well, as I mentioned before. I was addicted and I wanted more. So just few hours later I come crawling back to Johans DMs.
Pls good sire.. are you by any chance still interested in Pickle Rick?
Yes, but for 0.2 eth, he says.
Well, ser that is fine for me because I am addicted and I want to mint more cards.
So, what does this man do?
Out of nowhere, he sends me too much ETH but doesn’t want the card?
WTF?
Keep marbling and HODL your rick ser!
So i did.
I went on and marbled tens of new cards for the ETH he gave me. I’m still not sure to this day what I did exactly to deserve it but it happened and ever since I’ve been part of the MarbleCards community.
Shoutout to the OGs.
So, how did this random act of kindness two and a half years ago exactly impacted me so much that I’m writing an article about it now?
Well, as I explained in the beginning of this article… at the time I didn’t have a job and I wasn’t really in a good place financially. Digital collectibles on the internet was the last thing I could afford. If it didn’t happen i would never discover beautiful world of NFTs and blockchain in general.
This little act allowed me to have a lot more cards, some I sold, some I bought and some I traded. I’ve never made any serious money out of this, nor was I aiming to once I realized how much more blockchain is then simple GAINZ, LAMBO, and BITKOINS. Due to this I expanded my knowledge in the blockchain space and I always had enough funds to explore through the vast variety of projects on Ethereum. I felt fortunate to find out about all of these amazing things people are working on.
Fren I’ll tell you, I am in love with all of it
Today, after two and a half years, I have a nice NFT collection out of nothing. It’s not the greatest collection ever, but it’s mine and filled with things I like.
Best part of it all?
I’ve made good friends in this space and for that I’m thankful more than anything.
